Pack it well, and you’ll fit significantly more into the same space, keep everything in excellent condition, and find what you need in seconds. Pack it carelessly, and you’ll quickly end up with clutter, frustration, and potentially paying for more space than you actually need.

Good Boxes Are Half the Battle

Organized storage starts with the right boxes. Whenever possible, use sturdy cardboard boxes of the same size. They stack neatly, maximize available space, and won’t collapse under pressure.

Mixed-size or weak boxes often leave wasted gaps and can easily become crushed.

A few simple rules can make a huge difference:

• Don’t overfill boxes, but don’t leave them half-empty either. Half-filled boxes can cave in when stacked.
• Pack heavy items such as books or tools in smaller boxes, and lighter items such as textiles or pillows in larger ones.
• Seal boxes properly with packing tape to keep dust out.

What Goes on the Bottom and What Goes on Top?

A storage unit should be packed much like a well-organized closet: heavy and stable items belong at the bottom, while lighter and more fragile belongings should be placed on top.

Large furniture, appliances, and heavy boxes should be positioned at the back and lower levels of the unit. Frequently used items and lighter belongings should be stored near the front and higher up for easy access.

One of the best things you can do is leave a narrow walkway through the middle of your storage unit. This allows you to reach items at the back without having to unpack everything.

One of the most common mistakes is packing the unit wall-to-wall. While it may seem efficient at first, it often means you can’t reach anything stored at the back without emptying half the unit.

Refrigerators, TVs and Wardrobes – Handling Sensitive Items

Large appliances and furniture should be prepared properly before storage.

• Turn off your refrigerator at least one day before storing it. Empty it completely, dry it thoroughly, and leave the door slightly open while in storage to prevent odors and mildew.
• Store televisions and electronics in their original packaging whenever possible. If that’s not available, wrap them carefully in bubble wrap and keep them upright.
• Cover mattresses and upholstered furniture with protective plastic to keep dust away, and avoid placing them directly on the floor.
• Store clothing in garment bags or sealed plastic containers rather than cardboard boxes to keep them dry and protected from moths.
